Building Women’s Economic Sovereignty in Jomoro

October 2, 2024 | Social Development

Women in Jomoro receive income-generating assets, a first step toward building community-led economic sovereignty.

Women’s empowerment is central to the work of Hon. Samia Nkrumah. Committed to creating tangible economic opportunities, she has personally launched an initiative to establish sustainable income streams for women in the Jomoro district.

The cornerstone of this effort is a micro-credit scheme, for which Hon. Nkrumah has provided seed funding of GH¢30,000.00 to Quick Financial Service Company Ltd to facilitate its rollout.

While the formal credit scheme is being finalized, she is actively mobilizing women’s groups across communities and providing them with immediate, practical support to generate income. This “pre-credit” empowerment ensures women can build capital and participate fully when the larger scheme launches.

Recent Community Investments:

In three communities—Mpaesem, Enzemetianu, and Tikobo No. 2—Hon. Nkrumah has supplied each women’s group with a full set of income-generating assets:

  • Four (4) room canopies
  • Fifty (50) plastic chairs and tables

Each community’s set of canopies, chairs, and tables was procured at a cost of GH¢2,700.00. Hon. Nkrumah’s total personal investment in this initial phase is GH¢8,100.00. These assets will be rented out for local events, with all proceeds returning directly to the women’s groups, creating a cycle of self-sustaining community wealth.

This initiative marks the beginning of a broader plan to bring diverse income-generating projects to many more communities across Jomoro, fostering long-term economic independence from the ground up.
